The Year of the Cloud

Structure is back for its third year, and as the industry has grown, so have we! Structure 2010 introduces a two-day format to accommodate demand for more content and networking time. Join us June 23–24, 2010, in San Francisco, as we shape the future of the cloud industry.

Cloud computing has caught the technology world’s imagination. At Structure 2010, we celebrate cloud computing and recognize that it is just one part of the fabric that makes up the global compute infrastructure we rely on daily. From broadband to hardware and software, we look at the whole picture and predict the directions the industry will take.

Whether you’re in a corporation looking to learn about infrastructure best practices or an entrepreneur looking for your next venture, Structure 2010 is a must-attend event that can provide you with the best ideas, contacts and thinkers.

At GigaOM, we don’t just talk about cloud computing once a year. It’s a part of our ongoing editorial coverage on GigaOM and GigaOM Pro every day.

Our topics include:

Dealing With the Data Tsunami: The Big Data Panel

We’re hurtling into an era of machine-generated data and the real-time web, but the fact is, we have too much data already. So at what point will extracting knowledge from all that data no longer be cost-feasible? In this panel we ask what strategies and tactics can be implemented today in order to ensure that we are prepared for tomorrow. The panel also considers current state-of-the-art best practices in large data management, both their benefits and downsides.

Cloudonomics: The Value of the Cloud

The most important question to ask about the cloud is: why? Does it reduce cost, improve collaboration, speed the real-time enterprise, increase enterprise agility? And if so, in which scenarios? What are the implications for architectures, ecosystem trends and private/public/hybrid alternatives? In this panel, moderated by the creator of the term “cloudonomics,” we engage leading thinkers about the value structure of the cloud for business.

Guru Panel: Web Infrastructure for Real Time and Critical

In this panel, we assemble some of the gatekeepers of big infrastructure stacks that have to deliver critical results in real-time scenarios — from messaging to fiscal transactions. We take five of the biggest buyers of bandwidth, storage, computation and software on the planet and ask them, “How do you do it, and why did you choose to do it like that?” Come and understand how migration to a real-time web affects these companies’ infrastructure deployment and planning needs.

Hitting Reset: Reinventing Core Internet Technologies

The Internet was designed to survive a cold war nuclear apocalypse. That was in the late 1960′s. In 2010, the infrastructure of the Internet is being strained by, among other things, clouds and their bandwidth thirsty customers. In this talk Professor Nick McKeown of Stanford University presents the radical new technologies being created by his team that promise to create an Internet that will serve us well into the future.

Analytics and Management Layers

“You cannot manage what you cannot measure” — or so the saying goes. That’s especially true when it comes to investing in the cloud. In order to understand both the ROI and the performance of the deployment, the cloud client has to turn to reporting and management layers. In this session we talk to leading technology providers about the conflict between providing operators with the correct decision-making tools vs. creating policy-driven, intelligent infrastructure.

What Comes After the Blade? Architectures for the Cloud

In this panel we assemble some leading startups and big iron providers to talk about how what’s in the data center needs to change. The more we deploy the cloud, the more we are realizing how many of our initial assumptions about it were wrong — notably that commodity boxes could power the cloud.

Fatter and Faster: Reducing Latency and Increasing Capacity on Broadband

The cloud computing revolution, in order to realize its full potential, is dependent on one key factor: high-capacity broadband. As customers deploy the cloud they are finding that they need ever-fatter pipes and lower latency than ever before. This panel investigates the perspectives from the broadband service providers and broadband technology providers.

See what industry leaders had to say about past conferences

Structure 09 Alumni

“Structure09 was undoubtedly the best one-day conference I have attended in over 20 years in IT business. Laser focused on the cloud, but encompassing a wide range of viewpoints on this nascent field. Excellent cross-section of users, evangelists, vendors and VCs attending made networking highly enjoyable and of great value to my business. Well worth crossing the Atlantic to attend. A must for anyone seeking to profit from cloud computing innovation.” – Richard, UK, Structure 09 Alumni

“The folks at the GigaOM Network put together a truly outstanding cloud computing event with Structure 09. Simply put, it was a gold mine of top-notch speakers, world-class vendors and compelling thought leaders addressing the latest developments in cloud computing.” – Paul, USA, Structure 09 Alumni

“One of the few conferences out there really worth attending. Smart people discussing interesting technology and interesting business trends… Great place to meet people and test ideas.” — Chris, USA, Structure 09 Alumni

“I really liked the cross-functional attendees in the audience. IT Operations/Architecture folks, vendors, press/media, etc. It stimulated much dialogue in the hallways. I will come back to this show every year, and strongly recommend it to others.” — Justin, USA, Structure 09 Alumni

“Mix one part cloud leaders with one part killer audience. Add a dash of Om and his crew. Shake well. Serve up the highest signal-to-noise cloud conference out there.” — John, USA, Structure 09 Alumni

“The most valuable content per minute of any technology conference. All the information and people you need to know about one technology trend in one day.” — Sheldon, USA, Structure 09 Alumni

“Hats off to GigaOM to pull together such an event during the current macro-economic environment. Cloud Computing is at the cusp of the next-generation application development tornado and GigaOM put up a great show.” — Madhukar, USA, Structure 09 Alumni

“I talked to people who flew from around the Globe to attend this conference. I have also noticed people sitting on the other end of the globe blogging and tweeting in real time about this Conference. It is a huge success I would say.” — Sanjay, U.S., Structure 09 Alumni

“On the data center topic, Structure09 was the Superbowl, Wimbledon and Hawaii Ironman rolled into one.” — Tony, Sweden, Structure 09 Alumni

“The Cloud is an important but confusing area. GigaOM’s one day event was a remarkably effective way to examine the current state. The number of speakers who are key industry participants was remarkable.” — Peter, USA, Structure 09 Alumni

“This is a very useful event to get the pulse of the cloud computing industry!” — Gordon, USA, Structure 09 Alumni

Structure 08 Endorsements

“Structure 08 was ground zero for deep discussion and a robust exchange of ideas surrounding the future of computing infrastructure. From startups to established players, all who participated invested in the dialogue of technology choices for the coming years.”

–Raj Patel, Vice President of Network, Systems and Storage Engineering, Yahoo!

“Om has put together the ‘must attend’ event for those following the cloud computing space as well as related technologies such as virtualization. The mix of analysts, thought leaders, high-tech CIOs/CTOs, industry practitioners, and venture capitalists creates a unique opportunity to help understand the current environment, key player’s strategies, real-world issues and emerging opportunities. Although last year’s event was a sold-out event with 600 plus attendees, Om seems to know everyone in the business, and rather than a “conference,” the fast-paced format of fireside chats, short keynotes, and focused panels is more like being invited to a private intimate gathering.”

–Joe Weinman, Vice President of Strategic Solutions, AT&T

“Structure is one of the best conferences of its type – well organized, with senior-level attendees and a real buzz. It’s a great place to network and to follow the movers and shakers and also look for rising stars. But what I like most is the intimate atmosphere where you can set the world to rights with other experts over a cocktail. It is small enough to make that work, but large enough to achieve critical mass. I am a big fan!”

-–Damian Black, CEO, SQLstream
